Like most people, Bud Palmer felt this was just another day. Though the era was drawing to a close, he assumed his life as a sports columnist in the subtropics, in keeping with the benign fifties itself, would go on as predictable as ever. But that particular autumn morning he was thrust into a caper that was totally beyond him, forced him to leave Miami and take the train to Manhattan, and suddenly found everything in this restless "Big Apple" was up for grabs, on the brink, at a dicey turning point.

كان كلَّما دخل منزلًا هجره أهله تسلَّل إليه الشعور ذاته، مزيجٌ من الرَّهبة والحزن تختلط بروائح مختلفة من العفونة والحليب الفاسد والطعام الذي تُركَ في المطبخ لأسابيع، لم يكن يملك أمام هذا الشعور سوى التجاهل فقد كانت تلك وظيفته التي يعتاش بها؛ إصلاح ما فسد من المنازل بعد أن هجرها أهلها على عجل حتّى يتسنّى للبنك المصرفي بيعها في أقرب وقت، لم يجرؤ يومًا على أخذ شيءٍ من المقتنيات كما أصدقاؤه لكنّه مارس هوايته بالتقاط الصور الفوتوغرافية للأشياء المهملة لا يعرف لماذا وكأنّه أخذ على عاتقه أن يوثّقَ آخر رمقٍ من حياةٍ كانت هنا أو ربّما كي.

يسير المغني الإيطالي "طوني باغودا" في نابولي هائمًا على وجهه فهو يحبّ هذه الشوارع ويكرهها، يحبُّ الأزقة ويكرهها ،إنّه يكره الجميع ويكره نفسه، لا يستمتع بشيء سوى بنشوة الكوكايين بصحبة زميله في الفرقة. لكنّه لا يلبث إلّا أن يتذمّر من إدمانه وظهور التجاعيد في وجهه. لا يُبهجه شيء فى هذها العالم ولا حتّى حضور "فرانك سيناترا" للحفل الكبير الذي أحياه في نيويورك! لم يترك في نفسه أثراً للسّعادة؛ لكنَّ شخصًا غريبًا برداءٍ غريب يقرع جرسه ذات يوم ويغيِّرُ مجرى حياته
