Sinopse
Joining us for a chat is Magid Magid, Somali British activist and politician who served as the lord mayor of Sheffield.
Magid, born in Somalia, came to Britain as a refugee in 1994. He grew up in Sheffield and completed a travelling gap year before studying at the University of Hull, where his foray into politics began, being elected as Students Union president. Entering the world of work, Magid was elected as a Green Party councillor on Sheffield City Council in 2016, and from 2018-2019 he served as lord mayor.
Magid attracted plenty of media attention, posing for his inaugural lord mayor portrait by squatting on a balustrade in his green Dr Martens boots - quite the contrast to all previous, formal portraits. Magid was the first ethnic-Somali, youngest-ever and first Green Party councillor to hold the role as lord mayor. Thanks to Magid, it was time for change.
Magid has released a book titled The Art of Disruption: A Manifesto for Real Change, which is a manual for those wanting to affect change, be brave, seize the day and stand up to power. In this interview, we’ll be chatting to him about this book, why he felt it needed to be written and how just one person can make a difference.
