Mary Shelley was an English novelist who was best known as the author of the famous Gothic novel, Frankenstein. She was born in 1797, and her parents were the political philosopher, William Godwin, and the philosopher and feminist, Mary Wollstonecraft.
The story of Frankenstein begins with the explorer, Robert Walton, looking for a new passage from Russia to the Pacific Ocean via the Arctic Ocean. One day, they spot an emaciated man - Victor Frankenstein - floating on an ice sheet. In a series of letters to his sister in England, Walton retells Frankenstein's tragic story.
