Are social justice and Christianity enemies? Nowadays, it certainly seems that way. Ironically, many of the issues championed by the progressive movement find their origins in the Bible. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd in 2020, Collingswood Presbyterian Church (CPC) of New Jersey began posting signs on its fence endorsing God’s vision for a just society—standing in contrast to the pronouncements and actions of many so-called “evangelical” churches today.
Signs of the Times is primarily a compilation of sermons delivered in the summer of 2022 that elaborate biblically on the themes of CPC’s signs. They include messages on women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ inclusion, wealth, and white supremacy.
Written by the CPC’s pastor, Rev. Bob Higgs, Signs of the Times begins with an explanation on why the Bible is authoritative and essential to fortifying the social justice movement worldwide. He explains his methodology in analyzing scripture, demonstrating that the sermons are not just opinions, but plausible expositions of the word of God.
With a world retreating steadily from Christ’s vision for an inclusive, mutually supportive humanity rooted in love, Signs of the Times reminds advocates of the progressive movement that they are not alone. God is on our side.
