Sobre este áudio
A novel about the magical lure of books and summoning the courage to rewrite our stories by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Keeper of Happy Endings and The Last of the Moon Girls.
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.
With no trace of how these mysterious books came into the world, Ashlyn is caught up in a decades-old literary mystery, beckoned by two hearts in ruins, whoever they were, wherever they are. Determined to learn the truth behind the doomed lovers’ tale, she reads on, following a trail of broken promises and seemingly unforgivable betrayals. The more Ashlyn learns about Hemi and Belle, the nearer she comes to bringing closure to their love story—and to the unfinished chapters of her own life.

“The author’s ability to present two different, but related, heartbreaking stories inside her own novel and keep all the voices distinct is so impressive. The fascinating characters and the beauty of the writing pull the reader in…Highly recommended.”—Historical Novels Review
“Delightful! …very satisfying. Barbara Davis endings usually are!”—Midwest Book Review

Great Performance and I was emotionally invested in the story
I truly enjoyed The Echo of Old Books.
The voice actors did a phenomenal job. Throughout the book, I kept thinking one of the narrators sounded just like Scarlett Johansson—only to discover at the end that it was actually her sister, Vanessa Johansson! Their voices are remarkably similar, and she delivered a fantastic performance. The male narrator was also excellent—sometimes a bit too dark and brooding, but his ability to switch seamlessly between male and female dialogue made it easy to distinguish characters, which is crucial for an audiobook experience.
Long story short, Ashlyn, a rare bookshop owner with an extraordinary gift that can sense the energy of books and the echoes of their past. One day, she comes across a pair of mysteriousnbooks written decades ago, with no author or publishing details. The first book is written from a man's perspective, recounting his relationship with a woman named Bell. Then, Ashlyn discovers a second book, Bell’s response, offering her version of the same relationship. Intrigued by the energetic imprint these books carry, Ashlyn becomes determined to uncover the truth about the people behind them and what really happened.
While I found myself occasionally rolling my eyes at the characters' stubbornness and repeated mistakes, the story remained compelling. It’s not a book driven by shocking plot twists—you can sense where things are headed—but what keeps you engaged is the urgency for resolution. Do these two ever find closure? Are they even still alive? Will they ever learn the truth? That emotional investment keeps you hooked.
One of my favorite aspects was the dual timelines. I love books that weave together past and present through old journals, letters, or, in this case, two books telling the same story from different perspectives. Some readers (myself included) might feel that better communication could have solved much of the conflict, but we have to consider the historical setting—without the convenience of the internet, cell phones, or instant messaging. Plus considering the war and political influences of the time, and how far people would go for power, control and duty, it’s understandable why things played out the way they did.
Yes, both Bell and Hemi were incredibly stubborn and prideful, and yes, they had multiple chances to clear the air. But this is a book about star-crossed lovers, and it delivers exactly that. If I had to compare it, I’d say it’s a mix of The Notebook and Letters to Juliet.
Overall, The Echo of Old Books was a beautifully immersive read, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance, second-chance love stories, and books about books.
