Christian finds himself weighed down by a great burden he carries from reading a book (obviously the Bible). The original composition of The Pilgrim's Progress began while John Bunyan was serving a lengthy prison sentence for preaching outside of the auspices of the Church of England. Now, Bunyan's allegorical work is regarded as one of the most significant pieces of English literature.
