  • Every year, six-and-a-half billion chicks are culled in the global poultry industry.
    Why? They’re male. They don’t lay eggs, so they can’t be used in egg production and their body structure is no good for meat. When young Dutchman Wouter Bruins discovered this, he knew he had to act.

    In this episode of The Sciencing Podcast, the co-founder of In Ovo tells our host Faazi Adam about how he combines his love of poultry and biotech to find out the gender of a chick while it’s still in the egg. This means it can be disposed of before it has hatched, preventing the killing of day-old chicks.

    Join Faazi and Wouter as they discuss this aspect of giving hatcheries the option to only hatch the females, which is better for animal welfare and sustainability of the poultry industry.
