  • S2E8 - Using Music to Foster a Love for Language and Culture (with Christina and Andrés from Musical Duo 123Andres)
    Jun 3 2021

In this episode we have the honor of sitting down with the fantastic musical duo 123Andres to talk all about the importance of music in language learning. How can families raising bilingual kids use music in their homes to foster a love for language learning, and hopefully beyond that, a love for the cultures that music represents? And what role do we, as parents, play in this? Christina's answer to that last question had me almost in tears! You do not want to miss it!

Christina & Andres (known as 123Andres) are a musician-educator duo, passionate about blending music, language, culture, and education. They believe strongly that music goes beyond just notes on a page; music is connects us on a deep, emotional level. 123Andres now has more than 7 albums with music in both Spanish and English, lots of incredible videos on YouTube, and now even books as well! "Hola, Amigo" and "Diez Pajaritos" are two beautifully illustrated books that both have a corresponding song. Their most recent third book (Sept 2021) is all about community helpers, called "Mi Comunidad." Oh, and did we mention that they are Latin Grammy award winners as well?! Whew, we can't say enough good things about these two, why don't you see for yourself? Can't wait for your to tune in!

  • S2E5 How to Help Your Child Adjust to a Language Immersion Setting
    May 5 2021

Going into a language immersion setting for the first time can be overwhelming for a child, especially older children, and understandably so! As adults we can totally identify with this. However, unlike adults, children can adapt to an immersion setting rather quickly as their language learning skills are still extremely sharp. We of course want our young kids to take advantage of those sharp language skills by gaining exposure to a language as early as possible.

So perhaps that’s where you find yourself now; you’ve enrolled your child in a language immersion program, (maybe one of ours?) but you’re feeling a little apprehensive about how the first few times are going to go. Completely normal to feel that way, but how do you approach this topic with your little one? In this episode, we share some tips that we think will help make this new experience as seamless as possible. :)

  • S2E4 Montessori at Home meets Bilingual Parenting
    Apr 21 2021

Do you implement Montessori principles at home? Have you been reflecting on how they intersect with bilingual child rearing? We have!

Maria Montessori herself denoted the time from birth to six years of age as the sensitive period for language, so we know there’s a relationship there!

Join us for the second part of our conversataion with Jon and Daniela Perieda about raising bilingual kids. While we are by no means experts on Montessori, the three of us do incorporate many of the principles in our homes (Daniela & Jon particularly) and you’ll hear us chat about what this looks like in our every day lives.

Listen in on how important principles like following the child, observation, nature, focus, and learning in context play into raising bilingual children.

Daniela Perieda is an author, TedTalk presenter, and founder of Bilingual Family which is a Spanish immersion program in Oklahoma City. She believes wholeheartedly that teachers and families play an important role in the development of the WHOLE child, and specifically as it relates to language learning, she knows that language is passed on through play and meaningful relationships. You ready to listen in on the conversation? Me too! Let’s go!

Want to connect further? Find us on instagram (@bilinguitos) or visit us online at www.bilinguitos.com. You can also join our Bilingual Parenting Network group on Facebook! Also, check out Jon and Daniela's website at www.bilingualfamily.us :)
