  • H. Jon Benjamin on Bad Jazz, Unproduced Films, and Crying In the Mirror
    Sep 20 2024

    H. Jon Benjamin joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his latest turn as The Jazz Daredevil. On this third outing, the (overly confident while being absent of any confidence) character takes center stage in The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of the (Unproduced) Film… The Jazz Daredevil, which just as it sounds, is a soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made yet. But unlike his first two albums of instrumentals, this record also features dialogue of what would be the film, if the film were to have actually been made. But not all of the dialog, so there’s plenty of mystery for all of us to figure out. Benjamin, known as the voice to the title characters in both Bob’s Burgers and Archer, tells us how the script and concept came to be, how he conceived the character after a Bob’s Burgers live show, and the blind confidence and pride that keeps our hero recording and releasing despite the fact that he can’t really play piano. The comedian also reveals some of the inspiration they took from Bernard Herman’s Vertigo score, getting his Home Movies buddy Brenden Smalls involved for a metal song, and recording the noises for the sex scene. He also considers if there is more of this story still to come, before looking back on his work in Masters of None, and previews the upcoming Familiar Touch, which finds him taking on drama - and crying.
