This story takes place in 1944, two years before Matt leaves the L.A.P.D. to start his own investigations business. He and Sergeant Dan Hollister are on patrol when they get a call about a dead woman hanging by her heels from a fire escape. The murderer was easy to catch - he was asleep in that same building. Finding the murder weapon, however, proves to be a little more of a challenge for Matt and Dan.

The man who bought Matt and Amy's house after she was killed 10 years earlier decides to remodel. When workmen pound a hole in the basement wall they find an adult skeleton. But the body has been dead for almost 30 years - since just about the time Matt moved into it with his new wife, Amy. Now Matt's sitting in jail trying to explain what the skeleton was doing there in his house. He hasn't a clue, but his son, Clay, means to find out...and quick. The answer will NOT be what you'd expect from the upstanding Cooper.

It's 2002 now and Matt's 91. Clay is 52 and his grandson, Elliott is 22. Elliott wants to be a writer and has asked grandpa Matt if he and his private eye exploits would like to be the subject of his first book. Matt agrees and tells Elliott the story of how it all began back in the 1930s. This story starts in 1934 and has Matt telling of his beginnings in the Chicago Police Department, his move to Los Angeles, his beginnings in the Los Angeles Police Department, his first marriage to Stella and life after her death.

This is not your typical Cooper story. That is, the main character in this story, Eddie Heller, crosses paths with Matt Cooper but the story is really about Eddie and his quest to become a cop in Hollywood during the 1930s. It follows Eddie life from birth on, ending up on the streets of Hollywood in the 1950s.

Two bodies are recovered from a shallow grave in the woods. Two more bodies are discovered under the sand at the beach. Could they be connected by the same killer or killers? Lieutenant Dean Hollister is scheduled to retire at the end of this work day, but he has trouble letting go of this case. There has to be more he can do before handing it over unsolved. Elliott Cooper and Gloria Campbell step in to try to help.

The Coopers have their hands full with their latest case. In order to save bus driver Harry Fleming's life, Clay, Elliott and Gloria Cooper have to kill him. And they have to be convincing if they want to keep the twenty-five thousand dollar fee from their unscrupulous client.

It doesn't pay to be seen with Matt Cooper. First, his new girlfriend gets hit in the head with a rock and killed. Next, a potential client ends up dead on the floor outside Matt's office with a pair of scissors sticking out of his back. And lastly, a man Matt is questioning about the second victim gets killed with paper. Paper? That's right... Paper, Rock, Scissors. Sounds like some stupid kids' game, but the stakes are deadly in this case. And Matt's on the case, to be sure.

Clay and Elliott Cooper are hired by a movie studio as extra security for an on location shoot. The studio head promised them a $200 bonus if they'd rush a special movie camera back to Hollywood ahead of the equipment trucks. They almost make it back in one piece when they are confronted by The Hell's Angels out in the desert. Clay Cooper has to think fast to talk his way out of this situation. But that's what comes with age...the ability to think on your feet.

In the last Cooper Story, #86 - The Next Great Adventure, Clay helped get Harry Fleming out of town and saved his life. In this installment, Harry wants to repay Clay and invites him to come to Denver for a week. On the way there, Clay meets a woman on the plane and they become friends. Before the plane reaches Denver, however, it collides with a flock of geese and goes down in the Rocky Mountains. The only survivors are Clay and the woman he met. Now how do they get out of this mess? Or do they?

Elliott is hired by a member of the local country club to find out who has been stealing things from his locker. Sounds tame enough, but after Elliott sets up his surveillance cameras to catch the thief in the act, he catches something else on video instead - murder. Who bashed that fellow's head in with a Ping driver?

Elliott is hired by the FBI to patrol the street on his block during a parade for a visiting congressman. Elliott gets more than he bargained for when someone takes a shot at the congressman from a third story window. But all is not as it seems in this game of cat and mouse.

Matt's in line at the bank, trying to cash the check from his latest client. He's carrying his .38 in the holster under his arm, when suddenly, the man in line ahead of him turns around and yells to the customers that this is a holdup and that everyone should hit the floor. A fast-thinking clerk hits the silent alarm, trapping the robber in the bank. Now, in order to get out, he's gonna have to take a hostage, but who will it be?

The storyline in my Matt Cooper series now shifts to his son, Clay, who has taken over the private eye business. It's 1992 now and Matt's 81. Clay is 42 and his son, Elliott is 12. Bodies are showing up all over town with notes pinned to their bare flesh. The notes are clues from the killer. Sergeant Dean Hollister is not sure how to interpret these clues, but he knows someone who can - Clay Cooper. The clues are all connected. Can you figure out what the connection is?

Matt Cooper's back...somewhat. That is, his son and grandson open the story at Matt's graveside, paying their respects to the legendary detective. It's now 2012 and Matt's been dead for ten years. His son, Clay and grandson, Elliott now run Cooper Investigations and they're hot on a double murder case.

Elliott has a chance to ride along with a K-9 unit of his police department. The dog, Daisy, proves invaluable and Elliott can see why the officers get so attached to their animal partners. Daisy is facing retirement at twelve-years-old and his cop handler can't take him home, since his family is allergic to dogs. Elliott agrees to take Daisy home for his son, Matt. However, Matt's terrified of the German Shepherd so Elliott takes Daisy to his office and finds that the dog proves very helpful in his line of work and decides to keep her at the office.

In the latest conversation with his father, Elliott Cooper learns that retirement does not agree with dear ol' Dad. Elliott's father, Clay Cooper, once head of Cooper investigations, is bored out of his mind. Also bored with retirement is former L.A.P.D. Lieutenant Dean Hollister. So, Dean and Clay decide to start their own P.I. business, specifically for people their own age. As these two soon find out, retirement had it's up side and maybe, just maybe, they would have been better off leaving well enough alone...

L.A.P.D. Lt. Eric Anderson recommends Elliott to his friend, arson investigator Ron Harper. Ron needs help tracking down to arson suspects. Elliott is busy spending time with his now 15-year-old son, Matt and decides to take him along on his case, rather than leave him home alone. Matt gets a first-hand look at his dad's job from the inside, but was this a mistake? Matt could get hurt here.

Twenty years earlier, Clay and his father, Matt Cooper, purchased a fully restored 1940 Oldsmobile sedan, just like the one Matt drove when he ran Cooper Investigations all those years ago. With Matt gone all these years, Clay decides to sell the vintage automobile on one of those online auction sites. Something goes terribly wrong and Clay can't stop it, not that he hasn't tried. Someone's going to get killed, and all over an old car.

It's a long holiday weekend and Clay Cooper decides to take his son, Elliott fishing. As they sit there peacefully in the boat, Elliott sneezes and Clay automatically says, 'Bless you,' prompting Elliott to question the whole superstitious custom and how it came to be. By the time he's finished explaining it to Dad, Dad has some questions of his own.

Elliott and Gloria have left a mess back at the office and Clay Cooper uses that as an excuse to go and see his old friend, Lieutenant Dean Hollister at the L.A.P.D. He's caught Dean busy in the middle of several bank robbery investigations. Perhaps he could help, Clay suggests. Dean, always short-handed accepts and together, along with Detective Sergeant Eric Anderson, they answer the call for yet another bank robbery, the third that day.
