My own long experience of African hunting told me at once that every word in this thrilling narrative was absolutely true. Nay more: I knew that the author had told his story in a most modest manner, laying but little stress on the dangers he had run when sitting up at nights to try and compass the death of the terrible man-eaters, especially on that one occasion when whilst watching from a very light scaffolding, supported only by four rickety poles, he was himself stalked by one of the dread beasts.

The dwarf takes him to an Adept who resides in a hidden Rosicrucian colony high in the mountains. This Adept proceeds to expound on the Rosicrucian way, including Alchemy, Elementals and the acquisition of psychic powers. There is a demonstration of the transmutation of silver into gold using a red powder.

In certain respects, Through the Gates of Gold may be regarded as a commentary on Light on the Path. The listener would do well to bear this in mind. Many things in that book will be made clear by the listening of this one, and one will be constantly reminded of that work, which has already become classic literature. Through the Gates of Gold is a work to be kept constantly at hand for reference and study. It will surely rank as one of the standard books of theosophy.

I did not, of course, get Apauk’s story of his life in the sequence in which it is here laid down. On consecutive evenings he would relate incidents far apart in time, and only by later questionings would I be able to fill in the gaps. But at last I got together the whole of it, to my own satisfaction, and I hope the listener may get as much pleasure from the story as I did in the hearing of it.
