Notions of the undead have fascinated and terrified humanity for centuries, and none more so than those tales revolving around zombies. From the very root of the zombie myth back in the Haitian slave days to a saturation through popular culture, zombies have crawled their way up out of their graves, refusing to stay interred. Now, as their hordes increase and their hungers grow, the undead plagues cannot be stopped. It isn't just a case of no room left on Earth. The apocalypse is here.

The town sits alone. Empty. Overgrown. It’s like any southern town that residents desert and leave to fall to ruins. What isn’t like any usual small, abandoned town is that every 20-odd years, anyone in this town falls prey to a strange horde of monsters that enjoys nothing more than hurting humans. When a group of urban explorers discover the ruins of an old school building, they face the monsters, and they will endure more than they could ever imagine.

In Northeast Texas, the epic adventure of a group of survivors begins as they take refuge in a hospital, waiting to see if the worldwide red infection can be stopped before all humanity is wiped out. As victims awaken from a coma, they now have the basic need to attack loved ones, spread the infection, and feed on warm flesh. Only rage remains. In days, the dead outnumber the living, and the US turns to the ultimate weapons to stop the infection.

Beside the still water...the zombies roam. A slightly different take on the zombie genre, Smooth asks if the world be better if we were all neutral and complacent (without violence, greed, hatred, and yes, love, and compassion) in our personalities? The road to absolute peace is filled with more than just bumps and gravel when Catt Dahman tells it; heads will roll...literally. The town of Cold Springs is about to receive the gift of full serenity and some people intend to fight it (as well as the zombies) all the way to the end!

For the month of October 2017, J. Ellington Ashton Press, on their Wicked Little Things blog-talk radio, broadcasted a series of Halloween stories. These “Fireside Stories” (as they were called) were a big hit with the listeners, and the decision was quickly made to publish these tales of terror in an anthology.

Based on the Donner Party, Cold Hunger is set in the present but relies on the facts of the original case for many events. Partly historical fiction and partly apocalyptic horror, Cold Hunger brings the past and present together for a disturbing look into true hunger. In a desolate, disease-ravaged world, survivors are forced to travel to a new settlement to find safety. Led by the Donner brothers, the group face hunger, scavenger attacks, illnesses, human greed, brutal natural events, and something far worse.
