The Manual of The Mother Church has governed the activities of the First Church of Christ, Scientist for more than a century. Its by-laws address the Christian foundation of individual lives and church activity, as well as church structure and governance. Author Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “...each Rule and By-law in this Manual will increase the spirituality of him who obeys it, invigorate his capacity to heal the sick, to comfort such as mourn, and to awaken the sinner” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany).

Mary Baker Eddy's "Message to The Mother Church for 1901" offers insight into the nature of God’s infinitude; Christ; the pastor of the Church of Christ, Scientist; medicine; and other topics relevant to the practice of Christian Science today.

Compiled by Mary Baker Eddy, this collection chronicles the early days of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. It includes the special sermon Mary Baker Eddy gave when the church opened its doors in early 1895. The book also includes excerpts from newspapers of the day about this new religion, which was attracting international attention for its healing work.
