Newark Working Kitchens

Newark Working Kitchens enlists local restaurants to deliver nutritious meals to vulnerable populations — low-income seniors and families, the homeless, and frontline medical responders — sustaining and strengthening the neighborhood anchors that will power the city’s comeback. By purchasing meals from each participating restaurant, NWK serves thousands of meals a week in one of the cities hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Get Involved

NWK has identified thousands of additional Newark residents to feed and dozens of restaurants waiting in the wings to feed them. A donation of any size will go directly to keep Newark kitchens working and our community fed.

Sustaining Local Restaurants

Many local restaurants are in precarious financial positions due to Covid-19 and shuttering their doors permanently could bankrupt owners, put thousands of employees out of work indefinitely and leave a gaping financial hole in the city. And Newark’s history indicates that job loss and business destruction will be higher here than the rest of the state, making the loss of this local business even more significant.

Marcus B&P employees prepare one of the restaurant’s classic recipes for distribution.

A City in Need

NWK identifies populations in need through City Hall, Newark Public Schools, Bridges Outreach and Newark Emergency Services for Families, and works closely with tenants associations and community organizations to ensure meals are provided to those who need them most.

"Newark Working Kitchens has helped sustain important jobs and small businesses, while providing vital nutritional assistance to underserved communities. This effort has created a successful model to support the tremendous comeback our city is currently undertaking, and I hope to see this effort scaled in New Jersey and nationwide as a way to continue combating this pandemic's health and economic devastation."
—Senator Cory Booker
“Working with NWK has allowed us to stay open, give our employees hours, and lifted everyone's spirits after weeks of struggle.” Luis Valls-Amabile, Co-founder of Fresh Coast, where 14 of 16 employees are Newark residents
“Newark Working Kitchens (NWK) harnesses the full power of our abilities to combat food insecurity in our local community during this extraordinary time of need.” —Marcus Samuelsson, Chef
“I see how this crisis has deeply challenged my hometown. And so, I’m proud that this partnership not only sustains restaurants through catering orders for people in need, but it also feeds workers going out everyday in spite of this crisis.” – Michael B. Jordan, actor and Newark native
