  • DT 108: Be Receptive to Grace with Sri Dharma Mittra

    For the series finale, we are joined by Sri Dharma Mittra (@dharmayogacenter). The legendary yoga teacher first encountered yoga as a teenager before meeting his guru in 1964 and beginning his training in earnest. Sri Dharma founded one of the early independent schools of yoga in New York City in 1975 and has taught many tens of thousands the world over in the years since. Sri Dharma is the model and creator of The Master Yoga Chart of 908 Postures and the author of ASANAS: 608 Yoga Poses, the LOAY Teachers’ Manual, and Yoga Wisdom. He has released two DVDs to date – Maha Sadhana Levels I and II — and recently captured classes are available for streaming via alomoves.com, YogaJournal.com and Vimeo On Demand. Sri Dharma continues to disseminate the complete traditional science of yoga through daily classes, international workshops, and his Life of a Yogi Teacher Trainings at the Dharma Yoga New York Center. In this episode, you’ll hear from Sri Dharma Mittra on:  [11.15] His definition of dharma. He explains how he aspires to live up to the name bestowed on him by his guru through the practice of self-discipline, the pursuit of truth and the constant development of his inner intuition.    [13.00] His current practice. In his eightieth year, Sri Dharma Mittra’s daily routine consists of several rounds of agni sara, forearm stands, and yoga nidra, a practice which he believes increases insight and restores health to the body.   [17.33] Ethical conduct and veganism. Sri Dharma Mittra advocates adopting an ethical and compassionate lifestyle, including embracing a cruelty-free plant-based diet, in order to enhance our intuition and increase the likelihood of experiencing spiritual bliss.   [32.00] Developing psychic powers. He reveals how certain yogic techniques can be used to heighten psychic abilities but stresses that the practice must be consistent in order to be effective.    [49.18] The purpose of the asanas.   • DT 107: Stretching Redefined with Jules Mitchell

    Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, RYT (@julesyoga) is a Las Vegas-based yoga teacher, educator, and massage therapist. She blends the tradition of yoga with her extensive study in biomechanics to help teachers develop their craft and empower them with education. She regularly contributes to yoga teacher training programs and leads workshops worldwide, balancing the somatic aspects of yoga with the most current exercise science. Bringing the most useful and applicable pieces of that science into the yoga community is her passion, even when it invokes a discerning analysis of tradition. Her book, Yoga Biomechanics: Stretching Redefined, is now available through Handspring Publishing.

     

    In this episode, you’ll hear from Jules Mitchell on: 

    • [14.50] Her introduction to biomechanics. Jules began studying biomechanics, the principle of applying physics to the human body, in her thirties when she was already working as a yoga teacher. She describes how her studies had an immediate professional impact when she was able to apply her scientific knowledge in her yoga classes. 

     

    •  [20.57] Tissue mechanics. She explains how tissue behaves and adapts when force is applied. Teaching the fundamentals of tissue mechanics forms an important part of her yoga teacher training because it makes it easier to navigate conversations about injury. 

     

    • [22.53] The resilience and capability of the human body. Jules expresses her amazement at the ability of the human body to withstand stress and cautions against the assumption of fragility and the practice of excessive protective guarding.       

     

    • [42.52] Her personal practice. For Jules, the study of anatomy is a spiritual practice, a celebration of the intricacies of the human body, which allows her to understand herself and others better. 

     

    • [50.20] Stretching redefined. Henry and Jules discuss her book which encourages yoga instructors to apply the principles of biomechanics and refine the language and attitudes they adopt in their teaching.

    Pedro Luna (@yogawithpedro) and Bryan Holub (@yogi_bryan) are two yoga instructors and dads who took the internet by storm in the past four years creating globally recognized, funny, and relatable yoga/spiritual memes on Instagram. Pedro is the real life human behind the @yogimemes account, and Bryan runs @namaste_af. Together they are the hosts of The Yogi Show (@theyogishowpodcast), a podcast about yoga, mindfulness, and gratitude with a touch of humor. In this episode, you’ll hear from Pedro and Bryan on:  [10.01] The funny side of yoga. Pedro and Bryan reflect on their light-hearted approach to life and stress the importance of humor and its ability to relieve anxiety, especially in these difficult times.   [18.10] The Yogi Show.
