Pain is a survival mechanism of fundamental importance. It plays a crucial role in our lives, and eventually molds us into whoever it is that we become. At least it did for Zuri. After her world is brutally destroyed, she feels she has nothing left to hold on to but the fading dream of escaping the ghetto. Young, beautiful, and naïve, she is drawn into the world of sex and money, working at a hole in the wall strip club in South Philly.

It's truly OK to be where you are in your journey and it's OK to feel however you feel. This is your journey. No one can walk it but you. Within these minutes, I hope you will find even one thing that speaks to you. And just maybe through knowing that someone else has gone through what you are going through or have gone through, and knowing that they are still here and that they are still moving forward, it will give you the inspiration and courage to take that pain that you feel and use it to keep forging your path.

Losing someone is heartbreaking, but losing someone as prominent in our lives as our fathers changes us forever. Some of these ladies are in the beginning and you can feel their pain and anger, and sense of disconnection with the rest of the world, yet you will also hear stories of those who have had time to process and heal and grow. It's my hope that their stories will also give you hope to see that while, yes, this does change who you are at your core forever... it changes you for the better.
