Amid the desolate wilderness of the Great Plains of Nebraska, a region so isolated you could drive for hours without seeing another human being, sits Hatchery House. Having served as a church, an asylum and an orphanage, Hatchery is now a treatment facility for orphaned or abandoned children with psychiatric disorders. Haunted by patients past and present, only the most vulnerable find a home within its walls. Dr Lorelei 'Lore' Webber, a former FBI psychiatrist, has almost grown used to the unorthodox methods used at Hatchery House.

Pearl knows little of her father, Jacob, and elder sister, Row, who left her mother, Myra, when she was pregnant with her. Between them they make do, with Myra fishing and trading to make ends meet, travelling from island to island on Bird, the boat Myra’s grandfather made before he died. Whilst their life is a tranquil one, Myra still aches for the daughter she once lost. When a chance encounter reveals that Row might still be alive, Myra packs up six-year-old Pearl, and together they begin a dangerous voyage to The Valley.

A little more than a century from now, our world has been utterly transformed. After years of slowly overtaking the continent, rising floodwaters have obliterated America’s great coastal cities and then its heartland, leaving nothing but an archipelago of mountaintop colonies surrounded by a deep expanse of open water. Stubbornly independent Myra and her precocious seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, fish from their small boat, the Bird, visiting dry land only to trade for supplies and information in the few remaining outposts of civilization.

Vor sechs Jahren musste die damals hochschwangere Myra hilflos zusehen, wie ihr Mann ihre älteste Tochter Row kidnappte und mit einem Boot über die dunklen Fluten davonfuhr. Sie hatte keine Chance, sie einzuholen. Denn die Erde ist nicht mehr, wie sie einst war: Seit der großen Klimakatastrophe gibt es kein Festland mehr, lediglich Archipele, die ehemaligen Bergregionen, auf die sich die verbliebenen Menschen gerettet haben. Doch nun bekommt Myra eine einmalige Chance: Mit ihrer jüngsten Tochter darf sie auf einem Boot mitreisen. Eine Chance auf eine Zukunft, auf ein neues Leben.
