In August 2021 a women's creative writing group in Afghanistan shared news of political turmoil and the Fall of Kabul. These women were in the process of publishing a short-story collection when their world was turned upside down by the Taliban. In staying connected via WhatsApp messages, they established a lifeline; a vital space to keep their creativity alive, support each other and bear witness to the events unfolding around them.

Now that Soraya Nazari has graduated from university, she thinks it’s time to get some of the life experience she feels she’s lacking, partly due to her strict upbringing - and Magnus Evans seems like the perfect way to get it. Where she’s the somewhat timid, artistic daughter of Iranian immigrants, Magnus is the quintessential British lad.

Soraya Nazari is ready to make her mark on the world. If only she knew what that was going to be. The more Soraya strives to belong, the harder it is to blend in. Not least when, aged 21, she still hasn't been kissed. If she can tick that off the list, surely everything else will fall into place. Maybe a chance encounter with Magnus Evans - the last person Soraya could ever expect to fall for - will help her confront her past and understand where she is going next.
