Mortality and Faith is the second half of an autobiography of David Horowitz, the first installment being Radical Son which was published more than 20 years ago. It completes the account of his life from where the first book left off to his 78th year. In contrast to Radical Son which focused on his political odyssey, Mortality and Faith was conceived as a meditation on age and on our common progress toward an end which is both final and opaque.

Wyatt's life was not destined to be simple or peaceful. Raised as an orphan by an aunt, he never knew either his mother or his famous gunfighter father. When his aunt dies, Wyatt is run off by her brutal husband and eventually taken in by a rancher and his family. During his teens, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his kin, ultimately hooking up with some highway men and starting his life as a gunfighter - the Rattlesnake Kid. Running from the law he ends up in Mexico, where bounty hunters track him and his gang down.

In the cold dead of night, the Hatcher brothers break into Slade’s house, kill his wife of six years, Emily, and leave him for dead. But Slade is still breathing when his friend Josh Evans and his wife Lynn, Emily’s twin sister, find him draped over his wife’s body. After six months of recuperation, Slade and Evans set out on the trail of revenge. Slade survives and now put his guns to use once again, as he takes up the badge of the Texas Rangers.
