Eleven-year-old Ella Durand is the first Conjuror to attend the Arcanum Training Institute, a magic school in the clouds where Marvellers from around the world practice their cultural arts, like brewing Indian spice elixirs and bartering with pesky Irish pixies. Despite her excitement, Ella discovers that being the first isn’t easy—some Marvellers mistrust her magic, which they deem “bad and unnatural.” But eventually, she finds friends in elixirs teacher, Masterji Thakur, and fellow misfits Brigit, a girl who hates magic, and Jason, a boy with a fondness for magical creatures.

With Ella’s celebrity growing throughout the Marvellian world after thwarting the Ace of Anarchy’s diabolical plans, it’s proving hard for her to focus on her coursework. But back home in New Orleans the Conjure community isn’t too happy about her return to the skies for another year learning to become a Marveller. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, Ella soon discovers more dangerous secrets about the Conjure architect who built the school.

After saving the world from the diabolical Ace of Anarchy, Ella, Brigit, and Jason return for year three at the Arcanum Training Institute. But the heroes' return is far from welcoming. Ella’s big reveal last year threw everything into chaos, unearthing long-buried secrets and unwinding a twisted trail of deceit. As tensions rise between Marvellers and Conjurors, Ella realizes that the only way to end the chaos is to unveil the truth about what happened to the Conjure architect once and for all. To do that, she’ll have to enlist the help of the living and the dead.

Secrets and deception surround the magic school's founders, and the trio will stop at nothing to find out what really happened to the Institute's enigmatic Conjure architect. As they dive deeper into the mystery, it leads them to the Underworld and the Cards of Deadly Fate - a seemingly impenetrable prison full of villains. And worst of all, their old nemesis, Gia Trivelino, awaits them, ready to wreak more havoc.
